  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cardamom (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9-inch baking pan.
  2. Peel, core, and slice apples thinly.
  3. In one bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and cardamom.
  4. In another bowl, combine melted butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, and yogurt until smooth.
  5. Gradually mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined.
  6. Spread half the batter in the pan; layer half of the apple slices on top. Repeat with remaining batter and apples.
  7. Mix together additional sugar and cinnamon for topping; sprinkle over the apples.
  8. Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden brown; check doneness with a toothpick.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before slicing; serve warm or at room temperature.
