  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 9 tbsp unsalted butter (for caramel filling)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (for caramel filling)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for caramel filling)
  • 8 oz cream cheese (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two round cake pans.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, brown the butter until golden and nutty; set aside to cool.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, mix browned butter with granulated and brown sugars until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla and buttermilk.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined.
  6. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for about 36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For the caramel filling, melt butter in a saucepan, then stir in brown sugar and heavy cream until smooth; let cool slightly.
  8. For the frosting, beat cream cheese until smooth; gradually add powdered sugar until fluffy.
  9. Once cakes are cooled, layer them with caramel filling in between and frost the top and sides with cream cheese frosting.
